Why We Need Electoral Reform

Our present voting system results in majority governments that do not have a majority of votes. This causes policies that we did not vote for. It causes voter disengagement.

Around the world, most countries use a proportional system. Studies show that proportional systems do better on just about every index. They have greater voter satisfaction, more diverse representatives, stronger climate policies, less polarization, greater GDP growth and more.

We are facing multiple crises with real threats to our health, security and our children’s future. Good government action requires cooperation. Polarization detracts from the cooperation required to build agreements. And voters need assurance that their votes will count and that their representatives share their values.
