Media Release: Canada Needs to Protect Valuable Smaller-Party MPs

TORONTO, April 10, 2025 – Centre/Left Canadians are breathing a cautious sigh of relief because Pierre Poilievre has lost his lead in federal polls to Prime Minister Carney. However, Liberal support appears to be threatening the electoral chances of valuable NDP and Green candidates.

“We are very glad that a far-right Poilievre majority is no longer the frightening certainty it was,” said Barbara Schumacher, Cooperate for Canada, “but we hate to see valuable NDP and Green candidates fighting for their political lives. They are essential assets in our diverse democracy.”

Schumacher pointed out that many progressive voters are choosing to vote strategically to stop Poilievre, and this often means supporting the Liberals. However, a Conservative defeat by any centre/left party is still a victory.

“Would it really be better for Canada if current Green MPs lose to Liberals?” asked Marilyn Hay, Cooperate for Canada. “They are brilliant, experienced voices in the House of Commons. We need their progressive ideas and policies to be heard.”

C4C noted that too many NDP candidates are also losing ground as the Liberals rise. For example, polling projections indicate that Indigenous Two-Spirit MP Blake Desjarlais in Edmonton Griesbach has 32% support, the Liberals 27%, and the Conservatives 37%.

Now that the deadline for candidates has passed, C4C is directing voters to its endorsement list which will include Liberals, NDP, Greens, and the Bloc Québécois. https://cooperateforcanada.ca/federal-unity-candidates/

“We applaud voters’ desire to vote strategically to achieve a centre/left victory,” added Schumacher, “but if you have an effective Green or NDP MP or candidate, we suggest you watch the polls or our website to see if this person has the best chance of winning. If so, it’s strategic to vote for that candidate so that our next Parliament still has some valuable progressive voices ready to speak up for a fairer Canada.”
