About Us
Who We Are
We are a group of volunteers who share a growing concern for the people and places we love.
Our members include working and retired folks. We represent a broad range of sectors including: medicine, academia, civil service, agriculture, economics, the arts, public service, engineering, public education, business, and our activism takes place in areas such as climate, the environment, healthcare and social justice. Many of us are actively involved in other organizations that focus on the areas of concern we bring to light here.
We are not affiliated with any political party.
Most of the founding members live in Ontario, and we are proud to say we have members in Yukon and Newfoundland. Our membership is growing coast to coast to coast!
Our Story
Our founding members first came together in the fall of 2023 out of a growing concern that polls were showing a rise in popularity of the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), Pierre Poilievre. Many of our members remember the damage Stephen Harper did while he was Prime Minister with a CPC majority: weakening Canadian public institutions, environmental protections and public services, while undermining our democracy – proroguing parliament, making agreements in secret – and leaving the country with a massive deficit. We also recognize Harper continues to exert considerable influence over conservatives as Chair of the [ironically named] International Democracy Union (IDU), which promotes anti-democratic legislation, voter suppression, a lack of transparency, personal attacks and populist appeal – at a global level. We share a deep concern about the multiple crises we face in Canada and recognize that these crises will not be addressed with effective policies under Conservative led government – there is instead a likelihood these crises will worsen. For example, all Conservative governments in Canada have a very poor record on climate action, and have generally favoured support of the fossil fuel industry.
For those of us in Ontario, we are seeing first-hand how modern conservatism, i.e. small government and individual freedom, has been captured by the more extreme, regressive right, and is shifting towards valuing corporate freedom and profits. It is abundantly clear that the provincial PC government, under Premier Doug Ford, prioritizes the privatization of public institutions and services. The results: corporate profits are soaring, and the wealthy 1% benefit – without any public responsibility.
